KAMPALA — Concern and anxiety marked the faces of relatives, friends and supporters of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) Chairman and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago as they searched for answers about his whereabouts following his reported arrest by security operatives earlier this week.
The uncertainty began to ease on Wednesday after information emerged that Lukwago had been brought to Kira Police Station, prompting a rush of relatives, lawyers and political associates to the facility.
Among those who gathered at the station were Lukwago’s legal team, led by Medard Sseggona, his wife Zawedde Lubwama, family members and friends, all hoping to confirm his condition and secure access to him.
Lukwago had been missing for two days after armed soldiers reportedly picked him up from his home in Wakaliga on June 15, 2026. His whereabouts remained unknown during that period, sparking concern among family members, legal colleagues and political allies.
Witnesses said security at Kira Police Station was unusually tight throughout the day. Journalists, political leaders and members of the public who attempted to access the premises were repeatedly pushed back by security officers, with no one allowed near the station.
Even Lukwago’s wife and son were reportedly prevented from seeing him and were left waiting outside for some time as security personnel restricted access.
By early afternoon, activity at the station intensified as additional police vehicles arrived and security deployments increased.
At around 2:00 p.m., Lukwago was brought out of the station and escorted into a waiting police vehicle before being driven away under heavy security.
A convoy of police and security vehicles then departed Kira at high speed, travelling through Kireka, Nakawa and Nsambya before proceeding to Makindye. Witnesses reported that security personnel cleared traffic along sections of the route to facilitate the convoy’s movement.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., Lukwago arrived at the Makindye Magistrate’s Court, where he was expected to be formally charged.
The court appearance came after days of uncertainty surrounding his detention and followed widespread calls from lawyers and opposition figures demanding that authorities disclose his whereabouts and grant him access to legal representation and family members.
Lukwago’s arrest has drawn significant public attention due to his role as a senior advocate, former Kampala Lord Mayor and chairman of the PFF. It also comes amid heightened political tensions involving several opposition figures, including veteran politician Kizza Besigye, whom Lukwago has been representing in ongoing legal proceedings.
By the time he arrived at court, dozens of supporters, lawyers and journalists had gathered at the premises awaiting the next stage of the proceedings.
The charges against Lukwago were expected to be read shortly after his arrival.
